Simple Spiced Fudge: A Savory Holiday Gift

Simple Spiced Fudge: A Savory Holiday Gift

We wanted simple, easy, delicious this holiday season – and pretty enough to give as a gift. Our Simple Spiced Fudge: a Savory Holiday Gift did the trick!

Guys, when I had Penelope taste it afterward, she actually belly-laughed. It was that good.

Simple Spiced Fudge: A Savory Holiday Gift

One thing we love to do at What a Good Eater! is to take simple, easy recipes and kick them up a notch with some savory spice. And that’s just what we did here with this simple fudge recipe. You can do this with your toddler (we love putting our kids to work), and really, you can’t fudge it up! It’s a really beautiful treat for foodie friends. And the best part? No actual cooking is involved. This is our kind of holiday treat!

But first, toppings.

Before we get into the recipe, let’s talk toppings. You can get as wild as you want and the possibilities are endless, but we chose simply pomegranate seeds. Not only are they beautiful on top of the dark chocolate (they look like Christmas jewels!), but they are super healthy, loaded with antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium.

But the real reason we chose pomegranate seeds is because it is an excellent toddler activity to remove them from the fruit. It’s like a little game for them – make sure you get all the seeds! No seeds left behind! This is one of Penelope’s favorite things to do in the kitchen and we all get to reap the benefits.

Once you have your toppings ready, it’s time to make the fudge. Here we go!

Note: We made two different versions of fudge: one with traditional ingredients and another with coconut milk and diary-free chocolate. This is mainly because our little guy is dairy-free and we wanted him to be able to join in on the fun.

The Recipe for Simple Spiced Fudge

Age: 15 months+
Yield: 15 – 18 pieces of fudge (depending on size of dish you use)
Food storage: refrigerator friendly
Prep time: 3 minutes
Cook time: no cook!
Serving options: self feed, family-friendly

Ingredients

  • 1 12 oz. package dark chocolate baking chips (can use non-dairy chips as an option)
  • 1 14 oz. can condensed coconut milk (can also use regular condensed milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 cup topping of choice

Grease an 8×8 dish* using butter (coconut oil or ghee will work fine, too). Set aside.

Pour entire package of baking chips evenly into a microwave-safe bowl, then pour the entire can of milk over it and stir. Place in microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Remove, stir, then microwave again for 30 seconds and stir until ingredients have melted together and are smooth. (You may need an additional 30 seconds in the microwave.) Add all the spices and salt, and mix well.

Pour melted chocolate mixture into greased dish and add your toppings of choice. (Let your little one help – nothing about this needs to be precise!) Refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight, and cut into cubes.

We wrapped these in parchment paper in a festive baggy with a holiday tag, and gave them out to our neighbors and friends to spread some holiday cheer.

And there you have it – Simple Spiced Fudge!

*Note: You can use a smaller dish if you’d like thicker fudge, or a slightly larger dish if you’d like your fudge to be thin. We tried both – it’s really just preference!
